Assotiation of History Educators of Macedonia

History that Connects

AHEM in cooperation with EUROCLIO realized a project with a title “History that connects”.
The aim of the project is to improve capacity of AHEM, respectively to strengthen the network of teachers, with intention to include whole territory of Republic of Macedonia.
During the project was realized research of situations in history education, which results are published in the form of Report. The same later was delivered to the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Macedonia, Mr. Panche Kralev.

During the project were organized 4 seminars which participants were teachers from elementary and secondary schools, and actively participated researcher from the field of history.

In each of the seminars were present guests experts for history education from the region and Europe, who sincerely shared their experience with us, in the form of workshops and debates, with aim to enrich cooperation and to exchange experiences and knowledge.

Project financially was supported by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belgium, and during the realization were included more than 120 teachers from whole Macedonia.

First seminar                      Ohrid, 15-18 January 2012

The first regional meeting was held in Ohrid in the presence of 40 teachers from elementary and secondary schools in West Macedonia, international experts, guest from the region, OSCE and EUROCLIO.

The aim of the meeting was to make the analysis of the situations in history education in the Republic of Macedonia and to give proposals and suggestions for their improvement. Present teachers and guests were greeted by Ambassador of the Belgium for the Republic of Macedonia Mr. Marc Michielsen, Mire Mladenovski, Coordinator for Macedonia and president of AHEM, Besnik Emini, Coordinator for Macedonia and vice-president of AHEM and Jonathan Even-Zohar, project manager of EUROCLIO.
 

There was organized round table with topic: “Integrated history education in Europe. How we deal with languages and differences”, on which participated Johan Schustereder – manager for reforms in education, from the mission of OSCE in Skopje, and international experts as M-rs Mare Oja from Estonia and Ritta Mikkola from Finland followed by a discussion and questions from present teachers.

International experts M-rs Mare Oja from Estonia had a workshop with topic: Experience and the best examples for the development of the textbook: History is not just a Past, Past is not yet history and M-rs Ritta Mikkola from Finland from 1918 and how to teach in different ways.
 

Mire Mladenovski and Besnik Emini presented about current situation of history education in the Republic of Macedonia – education programmes, textbooks, teaching methods.

Representatives of the Associations of History Educators from the region, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Kosovo informed about current situation in history education in their countries.

During the meeting were organized many workshops on which teachers discussed about current situation in the history education in the Republic of Macedonia and shared their opinions, ideas for curriculums, textbooks and procedures for selection of textbooks, need for organisation of trainings and guidebooks for teachers. Ideas, suggestions and opinions of the teachers from the first regional meeting will be upgraded and enlarged in the next meetings and will be part of the common conclusions which are coming from the project.

Third seminar       ​                       Veles, 27-29 June 2012

In the frame of the project History that Connect in the period from 27 to 29 June 2012 in Veles was organized Third regional meeting of history teachers, on which participated 30 teachers from elementary and secondary schools in Central and Northeast Macedonia, international experts, guests from the region and representatives of EUROCLIO (European Association of History Educators).

The meeting is organized by EUROCLIO in cooperation with AHEM (Association of History Educators of Macedonia).

The aim of the meeting is to make an analyses of the situations in history education in the Republic of Macedonia and to give proposals and suggestions for improvement.

Jonathan Even-Zohar project manager of EUROCLIO informed participants with the aims and activities of EUROCLIO.

Mire Mladenovski Coordinator for Macedonia and president of AHEM and Besnik Emini Coordinator for Macedonia and vice-president of AHEM presented about current situation of history education in the Republic of Macedonia.

Lupka Hristova and Valentina Stamenkovic promoted the project Retelling the History – project of AHEM in cooperation with EUROCLIO realized in 2007.

International experts M-rs Iryna Kostyuk from Ukraine presented workshop with topic: “Active learning of History and professional organizations of teachers as partners in the development of education”.

Representatives of the Associations of History Teachers from the region, Serbia (Emina Zivkovic) and Kosovo (Fetnan Dervish), together with international experts informed about the current situations in the history education in their countries. Also exchanged experiences about dealing with inclusive education and diversity.

The representative of Forum ZDF in Macedonia Mr. Albert Hani informed participants about the activities and projects of this nongovernment organization.

In the meeting teachers made an analyze of current history textbooks and presented their conclusions about good and bad sides of the textbooks. After this there was common discussion about proposal conclusions and recommendations about textbooks, trainings, education program, resources in the classroom which will be part of final report which will be presented in front of Ministry of Education and Science Mr. Pance Kralev.

Second seminar                       Shtip, 20-22 April 2012

In Shtip was held Second regional meeting of history teachers, on which participated 40 teachers from elementary and secondary schools in East Macedonia, international experts, guest from region and representatives from EUROCLIO (European Association of History Educators).

The aim of the seminar was to make an analysis of the situation on history education in Republic of Macedonia and to give proposals and suggestions about improvement.

Jonathan Even-Zohar project manager of EUROCLIO informed participants with aims and activities of EUROCLIO.
Mire Mladenovski Coordinator for Macedonia and president of AHEM and Besnik Emini Coordinator for Macedonia and vice-president of AHEM made a presentation of current situation in the History education in the Republic of Macedonia.

Lupka Hristova and Valentina Stamenkovic promoted the project “Retelling the History” – project of AHEM in cooperation with EUROCLIO realized in 2007.

International experts M-rs Ineke Veldhuis – Meester from Holland presented workshop with topic: History, narrative! What’s the problem with that? Mr. Semih Aktekin from Turkey presented the workshop with topic: Big fire in Izmir, Who burnt Izmir?

Representatives of Associations of History Educators from the region Vojsava Kumbulla (Albania), Mina Marinova (Bulgaria), Katerina Brentanou (Greece) and Semih Aktekin (Turkey) informed about current situation in history education in their countries.

The representative of UNICEF M-rs Nora Shabani explained how UNICEF is trying to promote multiculturalism in Macedonian textbooks, to improve education and challenges with which are dealing during the realization of their activities.

In the meeting teachers discussed about current situation in history education in the Republic of Macedonia and shared their opinions, ideas about curriculums, textbooks, need for organization of training and guidebooks for teachers. Ideas and opinions of teachers from the second regional meeting will be part of conclusion which will be presented to the Minister of Education and Science Pance Kralev.

Final seminar                      Mavrovo, 30.08-01.09.2012

In the period from 30 august – 1 September in Mavrovo was organized final seminar, fourth in the frame of the project History that Connect/Macedonia. In the seminar were present around 80 history teachers in the Republic of Macedonia, guests from the region, international expert and representatives from EUROCLIO as well.
Working program in front of the participants presented Mire Mladenovski, president of AHEM and Besnik Emini, vice-president of AHEM.
Also there were presented activities of EUROCLIO in the region and other places, and the activities in the frame of the project History that Connect/Macedonia from Jonathan Even-Zohar, Senior manager in EUROCLIO.
Presentation with topic what makes history teaching quality was held by Michael Maddison (Chief-inspector for history, England).
Experiences from the region in front of participants shared: Ivana Dobrivojevic (Serbia), Ineke Veldhuis-Meester (Holland), Iryna Kostyuk (Ukraine), Jacek Staniszevski (Poland), Dzintra Liepina (Latvia), Jakub Lorenc (Poland), Vojsava Kumbulla (Albania).
During the activities were organized three parallel workshops from domestic presenters: 1. Irena Mladenovska: Multifrontal teaching; 2. Mire Mladenovski – Besnik Emini: Knowledge vs. Skills; 3. Lupka Hristova – Valentina Stamenkovic: Retelling the History.
In the end of working day all participants organized in groups participated in Pub Quiz, with questions from the field of history.
Next day, on 31 august were organized three parallel workshops from international experts: 1. Ineke Meester Veldhuis: Toward the wide horizon – Multiperspectivity in the history classroom; 2. Iryna Kostyuk: How to organize history education based on working with source gallery of visual sources; 3. Dennis Detling: Camps after the war, from the publication of EUROCLIO History in Action.
In the afternoon part of the program all teachers participated in the plenary session about next planes, next steps and suggestions, where teachers shared their experiences, give suggestions and proposals about mutual, and ideas about next plans. After the finish of the working activities all participants enjoyed in the official dinner which was organized in the restaurant TUTO in Jance.
Next day, beside predicted workshops followed closing session from Jonathan Even-Zohar, Michael Maddison and Jacek Staniszewski.
In the end, before lunch and leaving to all participants was wished successful start of new school year.
